My submission to this exhibition included 4 self portraits that aimed to challenge the notions of gender roles and the way we are judged based on how we dress and the poses of our bodies.
The images highlight the way one person can be treated differently depending on how they are presenting in that moment, yet their fundamental personality, skills and intelligence levels will be unchanged. The images ask people to reflect on assumptions they are making about others and also the way we ourselves are challenged by the way people look if they don’t fit stereotypes we expect of them. The work is a visual response that has developed after a research project I undertook in 2020 about the role images play in creating and perpetuating gender roles and stereotypes. The resulting research paper can be downloaded for free via my website.
