I met Melbourne singer & performer Michelle Berner at a shoot for 65 Main in Daylesford, where she was performing with Champagne Serenade.
She was keen to get some new headshots taken to promote her act The Michelle Berner Band (click the link to hear her amazing voice) & her brief to me was to create shots that felt like a live performance. She’s got such a vibrant & warm personality & so the idea was to try & make this come across in a still image. It’s such a great challenge to try & make someone’s sound & energy come through in a silent, 2 dimensional photograph.
We decided on using a location out side of Crown Casino, with with city lights of flinders st station in the background. Blurred out with a shallow depth of field, I thought this might give us the live feeling we were after. I used off camera flash with a softbox to light Michelle and was incredibly lucky to have the awesome help of Michelle’s friend & music student Alicia there to hold the lights up against the pesky wind. Thanks Alicia!!
Michelle was really happy with the results & sent me a gorgeous message after the shoot, saying “I am over the moon with your vision & you’ve definitely captured more of ‘me’ in those shots than any photographer in the last 10 years has done. I’m wrapped.”
Woohoo!!
