With floods waters finding their way through properties and over roads, and rivers breaking their banks across Victoria, it’s hard to believe we’ve been having such a water shortage for so long. The skies finally gave us what we’ve all been asking for. We just forgot to ask for it to not to come all at once.
A small town called Buxton in Victoria copped it’s fair share this weekend. The Silverstream B&B found it’s grounds underwater and we found ourselves holed up in a little cabin, listening to the rain. As the rain kept coming, water creeping up, step by step, we realised there was no going anywhere. As the rain came harder and faster we thought maybe we should just put our cameras and stuff up off the floor.
And this was before it got bad…
With Buxton’s surrounds still black from the Black Saturday bushfires, it was heartbreaking to see houses partially finished with their properties flooded out. One thing after another. The mix of torrential rain and ash created a strange smell in the air. Damp ash. A lady driving her 4WD through shin high water on the main road yelled out to us I reckon you’ll need gumboots if you wanna walk down there! A huge grin on her face. The human spirit is brilliant.
Up towards the Cathedral Ranges the dirt road was holding off being engulfed by the burst river banks that made new rivers on either side of the road. We stopped briefly to grab a couple of shots before feeling like we might be tomorrow’s next headline for stupidity better off heading back.
Above and below – this is not supposed to be where the river flows…
